An aerial used to protect Allen Park crews battling an interstate car fire sustained "major damage" when two vehicles struck the left rear of the apparatus, injuring three people.

A Michigan aerial was rear-ended by two vehicles at the scene of an interstate car fire early Saturday.

Allen Park crews responded to the burning vehicle along Interstate 94 near Pelham shortly after midnight, the department said in an online update. An aerial with two firefighters on board was used as a blocker at the scene to protect those firefighters attacking the car blaze.

Two vehicles struck the left rear of the aerial, injuring three people. The two firefighters inside the apparatus "were shaken up, but seem to be uninjured," the department said.

"It could have been much worse if no for proper apparatus placement," the department added.

The aerial suffered "major damage" in the accident and "will be out of service for quite some time," according to the fire department.
