Street Artist Adds Flair to NY Fire Department's Aerial

Victor Zarate first painted sideboards for the Rochester Fire Department's Truck 6 about a decade ago, and he recently created new ones for the apparatus.

A street artist has been adding vibrant touches to a New York fire department's aerial.

Victor Zarate, who works under the name Range, has made a name for himself in Rochester with his colorful artwork displayed on neighborhood buildings and in galleries. But he also has shown off his work on the sideboards for the Rochester Fire Department's Truck 6 for around a decade, Spectrum News 1 reports.

"I know a few of the firefighters and he asked me if I was interested in doing these panels," Zarate said. "I thought it would be a great way to give back."

Last year, the department replaced the 11-year-old aerial, and that gave Zarate a chance to create a new board for the apparatus. Part of the process is incorporating what makes Truck 6's station unique into his own distinctive style.

“That particular station uses green or yellow to mark their tools," Zarate said. "So I make sure to incorporate green and yellow in the design."

The artist's new sideboards were added to the rig last month, and the originals were "retired." They now hang in the station, displayed like the artwork they are.

There's a certain level of civic pride for both firefighters and the artist about seeing the colorful sideboards traveling along Rochester's streets.

“It’s awesome to be out driving through the community we serve and be able to have signboards that represent an artist in their community who’s grown up in their community to provide awesome artwork,” Capt. Dan Witkowski told Spectrum News 1.

“Hopefully now people will see it driving around and see the whole new Truck 6," Zarate added.
