Grand Junction Fire Station 6 has a new piece of artwork on display based on an 1890 photograph created by local artist Jeff Bates.
The photo used in the commission shows a horse team pulling a ladder cart. The artist enlarged the photo, traced it onto steel and then cut the artwork by hand using a plasma cutter.
“It’s a real feather in my cap to have this featured on a fire station. It really represents the community as well and this is historical accurate, it’s based on a historic photograph from the Grand Junction Fire Department,” Bates told The Daily Sentinel.
Grand Junction officials worked together to decide what type of artwork should be displayed and concluded it was important to honor the tradition of the fire department.
The piece was cut from close to a half a ton of steel, is about 16 feet long and weighs 1,000 pounds.
