One man died and another was critically injured after their SUV crashed into a Toledo Fire & Rescue apparatus that was returning to the station.

One man was killed and another critically injured after their vehicle was involved in a collision with an Ohio fire apparatus Monday that also sent two firefighters to the hospital.

The accident involving Toledo Fire & Rescue's Tower 17 happened shortly after 4:10 p.m. as the apparatus was headed back to the station. The rig was turning at an intersection when it was struck by an SUV passing on the left, sending the civilian vehicle into a utility pole where it came to a stop, according to the department.

Firefighters in the apparatus were able to quickly get out of the aerial and began extricating the two men trapped in the vehicle. Both were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and one of the men was later pronounced dead, the Toledo Blade reports.

Three firefighters were aboard the apparatus when the collision happened. Two of them were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the department.

The accident caused significant damage to the aerial, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Police are investigating the incident.
