CT Firefighters' New Fireboat Used in First Rescue

With help from the Coast Guard, the Norwich Fire Department took out its Marine 1 fireboat for the first time to save boaters on a sinking watercraft on the Thames River.

NORWICH - Norwich Fire Department's new Marine 1 fireboat was used in its first official response Thursday afternoon to help the U.S. Coast Guard rescue victims on a sinking boat on the Thames River, Norwich Firefighters Local 892 said on Facebook.

Before 5 p.m., firefighters said they were dispatched to the area of Trading Cove in the Thames River for a boat which had reportedly had hit an obstruction and was taking on water.

The department's 28 ft. Marine 1 fire boat, named "Chief Scand", joined the U.S. Coast Guard in rescuing people from the sinking boat, officials said.

According to firefighters, the boaters were evaluated and brought back to their port by the Coast Guard.
