Smithfield, VA, Firefighter Charged with DUI in Pumper Crash

While responding to a possible structure fire last month, the Smithfield engine crashed and flipped onto its roof.

A Smithfield firefighter is facing alcohol-related charges following a fire engine crash last month.

William Collins, 31, was responding to a possible structure fire Sept. 21 when the rig overturned. He was treated at a local hospital and released, WAVY reported.

After an investigation by Virginia State Police, Collins was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to drive right of the center.

Collins has been suspended by Smithfield Volunteer Fire Company.
