IL Firefighter Charged with DUI, Reckless Homicide in Rig Crash that Killed Woman
Rockford Firefighter Miguel Holland has been charged with aggravated DUI and reckless homicide in connection with a fire truck crash in March that killed a woman.
Marta Esquivias, 56, died of traumatic injuries after her Ford Focus was hit by the 2020 Pierce engine, according to WTVO.
Holland told police he was driving through the intersection with the green light when his fire captain told him to watch out for the car. He turned, but the engine struck the passenger's side.
The passenger in the car said they had the green light not the fire engine.
Data showed the truck was going 47 mph at the time of the collision, not 30-35 that Holland told officers he was going, Winnebago County State's Attorney reported.
When Holland’s blood was drawn at the hospital, he showed a THC concentration above the legal limit, authorities said.
Holland faces up to 14 years in prison. He was booked into the Winnebago County Jail and held on a $7,500 bond.
