Job Description
Under the broad supervision of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief implements and manages the Fire Chief’s plans and directs the activities of the Fire Department within the Department plan, including budgeting and daily operations. This position is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating all fire service activities, fire suppression, EMS, Emergency Preparedness, training, and safety education programs for the Fire Department as assigned by the Fire Chief.
This position has considerable latitude for independent action and is responsible for implementing policy. Work is expected to be performed under general guidance from the Fire Chief. Work is reviewed by observation of results obtained, through staff meetings, conferences, and evaluations. The Deputy Fire Chief evaluates the performance of shift Battalion Chiefs and Training Officer on an annual basis.
Key Responsibilities:
The Deputy Fire Chief serves as a key leader within the Fire Department, working under the broad supervision of the Fire Chief to manage departmental operations, personnel, and strategic initiatives. This role includes:
- Directs daily operations including fire suppression, EMS, training, emergency preparedness, and safety education programs.
- Assists with preparation and administration of the department's annual budget and oversees resource use, including overtime and leave time
- Ensures departmental compliance with laws, regulations, and internal policies; administers discipline and conducts internal investigations as required.
- Supervises and evaluates Battalion Chiefs and Training Officer; supports hiring, promotion, and disciplinary decisions; fosters strong labor-management relations.
- Oversees continuous training programs for fire and emergency response personnel to maintain high service standards.
- Collaborates with other city departments and external agencies; may act as the Fire Chief in their absence.
- Leads safety and emergency management programs; monitors projects and develops improvement initiatives.
- Represents the department at internal and external meetings, promoting the department’s mission and values.
Qualifications:
This position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced leader who meets the following qualifications:
- Associate’s degree or greater (in Fire Science or a related field, preferred).
- Ten (10) years of experience in a municipal public safety or firefighting agency
- At least five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience providing a full range of fire protection services, including management and supervisory duties.
- Holds certifications in ICS 100-400, NIMS, and EMS basics.
- Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation through the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.
- Valid driver's license.
