SD Firefighter Fired Over Facebook Comment

John Nygaard was terminated from Dell Rapids Fire-Rescue after a comment he posted on Facebook.

A Dell Rapids firefighter was fired after posting racist comments on Facebook.

John Nygaard was terminated after he posted a comment on the Facebook page of a university student who posted a racially insensitive photo on Snapchat.

"You're a public servant and your putting stuff like that on Facebook, that's not good," resident William Dezee told local TV station KSFY. "There's enough problems going on, we don't need racial slurs or people wearing masks or saying something..."

While authorities from Dell Rapids Fire-Rescue didn't comment to local media, they did announce their decision on Facebook: "John is no longer a member of our volunteer organization. Dell Rapids fire would like to apologize on behalf of our former member for his insensitive and narrow minded comments on Facebook. This is something we take very seriously and this type of thinking will not be tolerated by our members."
