FFs Find Family Member at Fatal MI Crash

Nov. 26, 2018
A man killed when he struck a deer with an ATV in Custer Township was the son and brother of two firefighters who responded to the scene.

Nov. 26 -- MASON COUNTY, MI -- Responding to a fatal traffic crash is tough enough for firefighters, and it's even worse when a loved one is the victim.

That was the case for two command officers with the Custer Township Fire Department, located 12 miles east of Ludington. Their son and brother was killed in an early morning crash Sunday, Nov. 25, when his all-terrain vehicle collided with a deer.

Nolan Crawford of Custer was identified Monday by the Mason County Sheriff's Office as the victim who was pronounced dead at the scene of that incident.

Crawford's father and brother were among the first to arrive at the scene of the crash, according to the sheriff's office.

The 43-year-old was driving a 2018 Polaris ATV south on Stephens Road south of U.S. 10 around 7:30 a.m. when he struck a deer, the sheriff's office reported earlier.
