CA City Looks to Break Public Safety Model

Feb. 10, 2022
The city of Lindsay is considering a transition from a public safety department to separate agencies with the goal to build a strong volunteer fire department.

The city of Lindsay will examine putting an end at their cost-cutting measures of using a Public Safety Department and transition back to separate police and fire departments.

At a city council meeting, interim Chief Rob Moore said the city should separate the two agencies.

In the coming months the city could look at what it will take to have separate police and fire departments. As part of the move, Moore recommended Lt. Nicholas Nave oversee the fire department as the battalion chief, according to The Porterville Recorder.

In Moore’s presentation, he suggested the development of a volunteer firefighter program could effective at keeping costs down.

Moore’s staffing recommendations for the fire department includes making Nave the battalion chief and having one lieutenant and one driver/operator coupled with  adequate staff of volunteer firefighters to accomplish the mission.

To help bring in revenue, Moore suggested deploying the department's rescue truck on mutual aid calls.
