TX FF Amputee to Compete on 'American Ninja Warrior'
Gary Weiland, who suffered an amputation in 2018 after complications from knee surgery, will compete on the popular TV show "American Ninja Warrior."
On Thanksgiving Day in 2018, Weiland suffered a complication from a previous knee replacement that cut off circulation to his leg. Due to the lack of blood flow, Weiland required an amputation below the knee.
Weiland beat the odds by returning to duty as a firefighter with the Denton Fire Department 10 months and six days after his leg was amputated, NBCDFW 5 reported.
Weiland, a father of four, will compete against other contestants on March 23 for the title of Ninja Warrior.
In addition to his firefighting duties and training for Ninja Warrior, Weiland is also a motivational speaker and children’s book author.
“If I win it, great, a million dollars. I could pay off a couple of bills with that. But honestly, I’m stoked to be able to get on the big stage and share with people a little bit about my story and how I was able to adapt and overcome,” Weiland told NBCDFW 5.
