AZ Firefighters Aim the 'Fill the Boot' in May
Apr. 30—Celebrating its 70th anniversary, the annual Fill the Boot campaign to raise funding and awareness for neuromuscular diseases will be taking place for three days in May.
Firefighters from Flagstaff's Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 1505 will be seeking donations for the campaign with boots in hand in front of Safeway, Fry's and Sam's Club on May 8, 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has collected funds in communities since 1954 as part of the program for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The annual program raising funds to support MDA's vision to accelerate research, advanced care, and advocate to empower families living with muscular dystrophy, ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease), and related neuromuscular diseases in support of the families MDA serves.
The partnership between MDA and IAFF began in 1954 when the IAFF signed a proclamation designating MDA its charity of choice and vowing to continue raising awareness and funds until cures are found. To date, the partnership has raised more than $690 million, with involvement from more than 334,000 firefighters nationwide.
"For 70 years, the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Fill the Boot campaign has raised critical funds for research and care for people who live with a neuromuscular disease, and we are honored to be a part of their effort for this important mission," said Casey Gonzales, president of the Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 1505.
