Anne Sullivan's dream was to become a Houston Firefighter. The dream became a reality in April of 2013, according to the Houston Fire Department Facebook page.
Then on May 31, 2013, a little more than one month after graduating from the academy, her life ended alongside her brothers Firefighter Robert Garner, Captain Matthew Renaud and Engineer Operator Robert Bebee when they responded to the Southwest Inn Motel fire and attempted a search and rescue mission inside the fiery building.
Houston Fire Department District Chief in charge of cadet training Chris Hill told FOX 26, "It's something that's near and dear to all of us firefighters. It's the worst day we ever had in the Houston Fire Department."
Although her time with the fire department was cut short, Anne left an enduring legacy behind.
An award named for Anne is given to outstanding cadets, and it doesn't go to the strongest smartest or fastest.
"It's the one that has the biggest heart. The one that overcomes whatever challenge they may have, doesn't make excuses, just overcomes challenges, and does the best they can be," Hill said.
Her dedication and desire serves as an example to all that if you work hard and strive to be the best, you can accomplish anything and make your dreams come true.
