Retired Mesa Fire Capt. Trevor Madrid died in November after a years-long fight against synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer found in the soft tissue.
Today, 12 News reported that the Mesa Fire Department turned out to honor his memory by making it a very special day for his daughter, Mila.
It was Mila's first day of kindergarten and the department made sure she arrived in style.
One firefighter told 12 News "We definitely want to show her that we are here for her and make her feel special because I'm sure she is missing her dad today."
Mila's mom, Angela, told the station that they are adjusting.
"We still talk about daddy all day long," she said. "Today Mila said, 'Dad, it's my first day of kindergarten! You're going to be proud of me!'"
The whole station turned out to cheer Mila on.
