An off-duty Gary firefighter faces multiple felony charges after officials say he struck an Indiana State Police vehicle and injuring the trooper while allegedly driving intoxicated. He fled the scene and police found him stopped near a fire station.

Michael Rodriguez, 47, was arrested following the crash early Monday.

Indiana State Police told WGN-TV that a vehicle struck a trooper's vehicle while they were conducting traffic control on Interstate 65 at the Interstate 80 interchange. The emergency vehicle had its emergency lights activated.

The vehicle drove away from the scene and other troopers located the vehicle on Interstate 80, driving through a construction zone.

Police said Rodriguez's driving forced road workers to quickly move out of the way to avoid being struck by Rodriguez. He continued to drive recklessly, and almost caused another crash, officials said. 

He stopped the vehicle at 25th Avenue and Jefferson Street, just a block from a Gary fire station.

Police said Rodriguez refused standard field sobriety and certified chemical tests, but they were able to obtain a blood sample. 

He admitted to drinking and driving and they found open beverage containers inside his vehicle.

The trooper was injured and transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital for treatment.

“First and foremost, I am grateful to hear the State Trooper is doing well, and I pray for a speedy recovery,” Gary Fire Chief Larry Tillman said.

“The Gary Fire Department does not tolerate inappropriate behavior, and our members are held to a high standard both on and off the clock," said Tillman.

Rodriguez has been charged with reckless driving in a construction zone while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a serious bodily injury crash and operating while intoxicated causing injury. Officials may also charge him with operating while intoxicated endangering, operating while intoxicated and reckless driving.
