After Years in the Works, Jupiter, FL, Fire Rescue Now Responding
At 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Jupiter Fire Rescue became operational.
"We have our people. We have our trucks. We have our equipment. We're ready to go," Jupiter Fire Rescue Chief Darrel Donatto told WPBF.
With its own fire department now, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews -- who have responded to incidents in Jupiter for 42 years -- moved out of the stations and left town.
"It's a somber event for us," said Palm Beach Couonty Fire Rescue Division Chief Amanda Vomero said.
Three years ago, Jupiter city officials announced it was creating its own fire department.
Hours before the department went in service, residents had an opportunity to see its fleet and meet crew members.
Donatto also said he's excited about the new relationship with the police department.
"We're combining on putting a paramedic out on a police boat. We're working with them on their SWAT medic program. We're doing joint training and leadership and development, officer development training together."
The final county fire rescue shift in Jupiter was commemorated with a photo, but leaders from both departments emphasized that collaboration between the two organizations will continue.
"We are close with them. They're great folks, great organization. We're working together," Donatto said.
Vomero agrees: "For our firefighters, it's not just a zone that they served. They built relationships. If Jupiter needs us and they're taxed in any way with their resources, they know we're only a phone call away, and we'll be there, and we will respond."
