Another Legal Victory Gets Former Cincinnati Fire Chief Closer to His Day in Court

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth District denied city officials' argument to protect the woman who terminated Fire Chief Michael Washington.

With another legal victory this week, former Cincinnati Fire Chief Michael Washington is going to get his day in court.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit was the latest to rule in the wrongful termination case Washington filed against the city.

After joining the department in 1993, Washington rose through the ranks and named chief in 2021. But his tenure lasted less than two years because he was fired by City Manager Sheryl Long, WKRC reported.

Since then, Washington has been fighting to be reinstated.

This week, federal judges denied a petition seeking to reverse a lower's decision that stripped City Manager Sheryl Long of her qualified immunity.

After the panel's ruling, Stephen Imm, Washington's attorney, wrote in a statement: “We are one step closer to reversing the terrible decision to destroy his career, and to obtaining the justice he deserves for the city’s shameful dismissal of one of its most loyal and dedicated public servants.”
