Springfield firefighters were tasked with putting out six fires in less than 12 hours starting late on March 11.

The first of four arson fires was set in the hallway of an occupied apartment building on Union Street. It caused very little damage to the building because crews got a quick knock down.

An accidental fire was contained to the room of origin in another apartment complex on Marion Street.

At midnight, companies where again called to the Union Street apartment complex for another arson fire in the hallway. Firefighters quickly contained the fire on the second floor.

A fire was reported on the back porch of an occupied 2 1/2-story wood-frame dwelling on Hancock Street around 5 a.m. Fire had taken possession of the second floor and was spreading to a similar building on the Bravo side when crews arrived. A second alarm assignment was needed to knock down this fire but the action was not done yet.

Just as second alarm companies where packing up, a fire was reported on Andrew Street.

Available Springfield fire companies headed for Andrew Street along with mutual aid from neighboring West Springfield and Chicopee and they found a two-story frame dwelling well involved. All occupants escaped the home. A defensive attack was initiated with several aerial master streams and large caliber hand lines to contain the fire to the home of origin.

Late Sunday morning, firefighters were called to another fire at the Union Street apartment building where a small trash fire was contained.
