Historic Darlington County, SC, Church Destroyed by Fire

July 21, 2025
The cause of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church fire is under investigation.

A fire destroyed a historic Darlington County church, but the congregation gathered as usual Sunday.

They met under a large tent near the smoldering remains of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church  building constructed in 1910. Established in 1869, it's one of the oldest Black congregations in the county.

The cause of the fire, reported Saturday afternoon, remains under investigation by South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, WBTW reported.

Firefighters from Palmetto, Darlington Fire Department, Darlington County Fire District, Windy Hill, and West Florence Fire-Rescue worked together to battle the flames.
