30 Cats Killed in SC Mobile Home Fire

Oct. 8 — York County, SC - Two sisters in their 70s were able to escape a house fire Thursday near York, but more than 30 cats died in the blaze, officials said.

The fire happened Thursday afternoon at a mobile home on Brown Neal Road. The area is off U.S. 321 in York County between York and McConnells.

The sisters, who were residents of the home, were able to get out without injury, said Greg Suskin, spokesman for York County. However, more than 30 cats that were inside the home died in the fire, Suskin said.

The residence is a total loss after heavy smoke and fire damage, Suskin said. It is not believed that the residents had insurance, Suskin said.

Firefighters from the city of York Fire Department, and Bethesda and McConnells volunteer departments, responded to the fire. York County Sheriff's Office deputies also responded.

Investigators with the York County Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause was an accidental and electrical-related, Suskin said.

A third resident of the house was not home at the time of the fire, Suskin said.

The American Red Cross Palmetto chapter that serves the Upstate of South Carolina was called to assist the residents of the home with emergency assistance for housing, clothing and other needs, officials said. Donations to help the residents can be made through the Red Cross website.
