Sep. 21—Two people were killed early Sunday morning during a fire at a Portland apartment building.
The three-story, four-unit building at 43 St. Lawrence St. was fully occupied at the time of the blaze, which was reported at around 2:17 a.m., according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
When Portland firefighters arrived at the scene, heavy flames had engulfed the area around the building's back porch, Moss said. While most occupants were able to escape, two people were found dead inside the building.
The two bodies have been taken to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the fire.
