Dec. 8—Five people, four of them children, were killed late Sunday in a house fire that tore through a home at the base of California's Southern Sierra Nevada mountains, authorities said.

Firefighters were called at 11:18 p.m. to a residence on South Indiana Street in Porterville ( Tulare County) and arrived to find the structure engulfed, authorities said.

Crews launched an attack on the flames and rushed inside to search for victims.

They located one adult and four children in the home and pulled them out as firefighters and paramedics attempted lifesaving measures. All five were pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is a devastating loss for the family and for our community," Fire Chief Bryan Cogburn said in a statement. "Our thoughts and condolences are with the loved ones affected by this tragedy."

The victims' names are being withheld pending notification of relatives. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as fire personnel work to determine where and how it started. The blaze was contained to the single residence.

Officials said additional details will be released as they become available.
