A fire at Shell Norco burned for hours overnight and into Tuesday morning after one of the process units at the St. Charles Parish refinery caught flame, according to company officials.

The blaze, which broke out Monday evening, was extinguished as of 9 a.m., Shell Narco officials said.

All Shell personnel were safe and accounted for and no injuries were reported.

No shelter-in-place orders were issued. Air monitoring done by the Shell and third-party providers had not shown elevated levels of chemical emissions as of 9 a.m., company officials said.

Nearby residents were jolted from their sleep by an explosion and the wafting smoke from the large fire, videos on social media showed.

“We recognize and understand that this incident caused significant late night disruptions for our community. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work to extinguish the fire and mitigate impacts at the site,” Shell Norco said on Facebook.
