A four-alarm fire swept through a row of attached homes in Allentown early Saturday, displacing 16 residents and sending one firefighter to the hospital, the city’s fire department reported.

The fire department responded to the 200 block of South Saint Cloud Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. Arriving crews found an active fire spreading through connected residential structures and searched the buildings while working to contain the spread, the department said in a news release.

As the fire grew, a call went out for mutual aid. Crews from the Bethlehem Fire Department and multiple Lehigh County fire companies assisted in bringing the blaze under control after several hours.

Approximately 45 people were evacuated, and 16 residents were displaced from their homes due to fire, smoke or water damage, the news release said.

The American Red Cross is providing temporary shelter and support services to those affected.

No civilian injuries were reported. One firefighter sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The release did not identify the firefighter.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by the Allentown Fire Marshal’s Office.
