Two firefighters were hospitalized Monday with injuries sustained while battling a blaze in a Massachusetts city.
The Somerville Fire Department responded at around 10 p.m. to a commercial building at 129 Broadway, according to WCVB. At the scene, they found the building in flames.
The building houses a barber shop and Rei Da Picanha, a Brazilian restaurant. The businesses were closed and no one was inside when firefighters responded, according to Boston 25 News.
Two firefighters were injured while attempting to shut off electricity to the building, according to WHDH. Both were released from the hospital after being treated.
Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, small flames continued to burn and smoke wafted through the caved-in roof. One fire truck remained outside the restaurant.
Officials believe the fire started in the basement, according to WCVB.
“This was an extremely stubborn fire,” Somerville Fire Chief Charles Breen told the station. “Normally we are not on a fire scene for this long. It was very stubborn. The fire got up in the walls and up into the ceilings and into the roof. The first floor collapsed into the basement partially, and the roof has also collapsed into the first floor.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
