Fire Destroys Post Office in Rural Riley, IN

The Indiana State Fire Marshal and ATF are investigating the fire at the Riley Post Office.

A fire destroyed the U.S. Post Office in Riley over the weekend.

Riley Fire Department firefighters arrived about 4 a.m. Saturday in response to the call and saw flames emanating from the south side of the building and starting to come through the roof, said Fire Chief Matt McCullough.

While the building, a smallish double-modular unit at 7800 Indiana 46, did not burn down, interior damage was so extensive it could be considered a total loss, the chief said.

It took roughly an hour to suppress the fire, and no one was injured. Fire departments assisting included Honey Creek, Seelyville and Sugar Creek

The state fire marshal and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms will lead the investigation because the post office is a federal facility. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, operations are suspended at the Riley post office.

Beginning Tuesday and throughout the temporary closure, Riley customers may access P.O. Box mail and obtain retail services at the Terre Haute Sorting and Delivery Center, 150 W. Margaret Dr.

Hours of operation at the Terre Haute S&DC for Riley mail pick up are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

There is no information on a reopening date for the Riley Post Office.
