Nov. 20--Fire officials plan to spend all day Sunday investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire that ripped through Suburban Park Apartments Saturday afternoon and left nearly 30 people homeless.
Nearly 100 firefighters from York Area United Fire and Rescue and 10 other local fire departments were dispatched to a working fire at the Springettsbury apartment complex about 1:45 p.m. Saturday, said Chief Robert H. McCoy Jr. of York Area United Fire and Rescue.
He said they had the fire under control within one hour and were on scene all night securing the area and making sure there were no re-burns.
The complex's building at 2681 Carnegie Road suffered severe smoke, fire and water damage, and the roof over the building's 11 units had caved in. Two other units in another building were also damaged by the fire, said McCoy.
While an exact cause of fire hasn't yet been identified, McCoy said, as of Sunday morning, he's focusing the investigation on a heating and ventilation room located in one of the apartment units.
"This is definitely one of the larger fires we've seen in Springettsbury lately," said McCoy.
