INDIANAPOLIS --
Indianapolis firefighters investigated a possible manhole explosion downtown on Saturday.
At about 9:30 p.m., Indianapolis Fire Department crews were called to the intersection of Maryland and Pennsylvania avenues on reports of a car fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found a car on fire, and a manhole cover that had exploded underneath the car, officials said.
"In a situation like this, we have to be careful on the amount of water we throw on the fire because it could easily cause a secondary explosion. Electricity could travel through the water hose and injure one of our firefighters," IFD spokesman Eric Hofmeister said.
Police said streets surrounding Conseco Fieldhouse were blocked off.
IFD investigators remained at the scene to determine the cause of the explosion.
Officials did not report any injuries.
