Memphis Crews Battle Four Vacant House Fires

Nov. 17--Memphis firefighters battled fires in four vacant houses separated by several miles on Wednesday afternoon. A fire at 737 Pontotoc, near Walnut and Linden, was reported at 12:17 p.m. followed a minute later by one at 1438 Leflore, near South Parkway East and Lauderdale, according to Memphis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke. There was also a fire at a vacant house at 693 Pontotoc. The vacant structures were heavily damaged with some parts of the buildings collapsing, Cooke said.

At about 1:40 p.m., another vacant house was damaged by a blaze reported at 1421 Valse, near Elvis Presley and Dunn.

The fires on Leflore and Valse were separated by at least two miles in South Memphis and the fires on Pontotoc are near the Medical Center area.

Cooke said investigators were examining the blazes.
