Nov. 14--FERNDALE -- Two cement trucks were scorched beyond repair Sunday afternoon, Nov. 13, when an apparent mechanical fire was sparked in one truck and then spread to two others parked next to it.
About 4:10 p.m., firefighters were called out to the Ferndale Ready Mix plant, 5271 Creighton Road, to a report of flames coming from one of the trucks, said Fire District 7 Assistant Chief Larry Hoffman.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze within 10 minutes of arriving, but not before two trucks were "completely damaged," Hoffman said. The extreme heat also damaged a third truck.
The fire appeared to have been sparked in the first truck's engine compartment. The cause is still under investigation, but the initial police report suggested it was an accident.
Hoffman estimated the property damage will cost from $75,000 to $100,000.
Ferndale Ready Mix has a fleet of about two dozen cement trucks.
