Nov. 01-- Fire destroyed at least one building in an apartment complex Tuesday in south Tulsa, affecting about 100 residents, officials said.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries when part of a ceiling fell on him at Windsail Apartments, 9808 E. 73rd St., said Stan May, spokesman for the Tulsa Fire Department.
EMSA Public Information Officer Chris Stevens said an adult male was transported with minor injuries to St. Francis Hospital in fair condition. No other injuries were reported.
Crews with the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the apartments to provide relief to those affected by the fire. Spokeswoman Donita Quesnel said about 100 residents were affected.
Red Cross officials plan to open shelter at 5:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6767 S. Mingo Road, Quesnel said.
Authorities received the initial report of a fire about 11:35 a.m. at the apartments, May said.
A second alarm was sent out about 11:45 a.m. for more firefighters to fight the spreading blaze, May said.
The entire roof of one of the buildings collapsed, causing extensive damage to the third and second floors of the building. About 24 units were affected by flames or smoke and water damage, May said.
Fire reached at least one other building, and firefighters evacuated three buildings in the complex.
It took crews more than an hour to bring the blaze under control, May said. Investigators are trying to determine what started the fire.
At least one dog was rescued from the fire, May said. It is unknown if any other pets were lost in the blaze.
Winds were high Tuesday with gusts above 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service. May said the high winds were making their firefighting efforts difficult.
