PATRICK COUNTY, Va. --
A Patrick County elementary school was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning, a school official said.
Patrick County Schools Superintendent Dr. Roger Morris said a fire alarm at Meadows of Dan Elementary School alerted fire officials of the fire at 3:15 a.m. Saturday.
Fire officials said 54 firefighters from 17 different departments arrived to put out the fire about 4 a.m.
Steve Allen, the emergency management director for Patrick County, said it took firefighters three hours to get the blaze under control.
Town officials said firefighters had to pump water from nearby ponds about 2 miles away to put out fire because they don't have water service.
Allen said no one was injured in the fire.
Morris said students will not report to school on Monday, but will come to school Tuesday. Classes will meet in the gymnasium. Bassett Furniture said it is going to provide dividers so students can have classes in the gym.
The school was built in 1938 and has about 130 students.
Morris said the school was destroyed, but the fire did not touch the new gym, the cafeteria and other separate buildings.
