Brooklyn Synagogue Damaged in 2-Alarm Blaze

Oct. 23--BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- A two-alarm fire damaged a synagogue early this morning in Willliamsburg. According to investigators, the cause may be electrical. Fire officials say the flames that damaged the Satmar Synagogue on South 8th Street and Bedford Avenue began in the basement sometime around 4:40 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters evacuated the residential apartments on the upper floors. The building sustained fire and water damage, but fire and police officials say it remains sound, structurally.

More than 100 firefighters from 27 fire companies responded to the scene.

No one was hurt.
