Oct. 21--JAFFREY -- Firefighters from 13 towns and Jaffrey were sent to battle a fire at the New England Wood Pellet on Old Sharon Road Thursday night.

An employee detected a fire in a company "cooler" and alerted officials at 6:11 p.m., according to emergency dispatchers.

The first units reported a smoke condition and called for a second alarm. At 6:47 p.m. a fourth alarm was requested, which brought the total mutual aid departments on scene to 13. The facility did not appear to be ablaze.

Gerald Charlonne, who lives next door to the plant, said he smelled no smoke, despite the commotion.

"I can't see anything. All I can see from here is flashing lights," Charlonne said.

He said about a dozen people work at the facility, which is owned by Steven Walker, the son-in-law of 2nd District Congressman Charlie Bass.

The facility is located at 141 Old Sharon Road.

The Jaffrey plant serves as the flagship for New England Pellet, according to the company website. The company also researches and designs equipment used for pellet manufacturing, and it has facilities in Massachusetts and New York.
