Oct. 18--Hot bread crumbs led to a fire that damaged a local fish processing plant early Tuesday morning, firefighters say.

Gloucester firefighters were called to North Atlantic Fish Co. at 40 Commercial St. at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday on reports of smoke coming from vents. The company breads, bakes and freezes fish for sale to hospitals, schools, colleges and other businesses.

According to police and fire reports, hot bread crumbs left by a cleaning crew inside a plastic container at the fish breading company caught fire, melted through the plastic and ignited wooden pallets. The resulting blaze spread the fire up into the roof.

According to fire officials, all the pallets were burned, the plant's roof was damaged and the inside of the building was heavily damaged by smoke. The outside concrete walls, however, were not damaged.

A teen riding a skateboard on the corner of Duncan and Rogers streets was struck by a car Wednesday at 4 p.m. No other information was available from police. But a witness saw the teen holding his skateboard and talking to another teen after officers left the scene.

There were no reported injuries in a two-vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer truck on Grant Circle at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday.

According to police reports, the truck was entering the rotary from the Route 128 South extension when it collided with a car already on the rotary.

Both vehicles had minor damage afterward but were driven from the scene.

Police said no citations were issued in the incident.
