Oct. 17--A San Jose home in the Evergreen was destroyed this morning by a fire that was likely started by a self-cleaning oven, according to fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez.
The two-alarm fire was reported at 9:51 a.m. in the 300 block of Heritage Valley Drive off Aborn Road. The homeowner turned on the self-cleaning oven and left home to go to work, Gutierrez said. The resident returned home, saw smoke and called 911.
Firefighters responded to the home in five minutes and saw heavy smoke and fire inside the house, Gutierrez said. The blaze was under control at 11:30 a.m.
Thirty-seven firefighters responded to the blaze, which was declared contained at 10:37 a.m. One firefighter suffered a minor injury when a piece of sheet rock fell on his head, Gutierrez. The firefighter complained of neck pain and was taken to a hospital.
Three people were displaced because of the fire. Based on the preliminary investigation, the fire has been ruled accidental.
