Oct. 09--DALTON -- A fire on Hamilton Street in downtown Dalton that destroyed several businesses Sunday morning was under control by 11 a.m., but much of the area remains closed to traffic and pedestrians.

Most of the Peacock Alley, which contains about 10 businesses, and Accounting Data Systems were destroyed, said Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield. White Cotton Leather received heavy smoke and water damage, but most of the inventory was salvaged, Satterfield said.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene through the rest of today and possibly into Monday extinguishing hot spots and investigating the cause of the fire. Satterfield expects the 300 block of Hamilton Street, and possibly some surrounding streets to remain closed through at least Monday morning.

The fire call came in to 911 through an alarm company around 6:30 a.m. and when firefighters arrived, the building was filled with smoke, Satterfield said. The flames soon became too intense for firefighters to safely battle, he said. They began focusing on keeping the fire away from adjacent businesses.

The fire spread to Accounting Data Systems, which is the next business south of Peacock Alley, but it did not spread any further, Satterfield said.

One firefighter was injured with a cut to his hand and was transported to Hamilton Medical Center, but he is fine otherwise, Satterfield said.
