Oct. 06--A woman died and two people were injured when fire broke out this morning in a Northeast Portland apartment building.
When firefighters arrived about 10:45 a.m. at 4605 N.E. Killingsworth, they found two people had jumped from a second story window in the eight-unit Normandy Apartment complex.
Fearing the fire would spread throughout the complex, a second alarm was called. About 50 firefighters fought the blaze, attacking it from the roof and from the unit below.
As firefighters were battling the aggressive blaze, they learned someone was still in an upper unit. They put out the fire below and fought up to the second floor apartment where they found a woman dead in a bedroom.
Three units were damaged in the fire.
The people who jumped were taken to Emanuel Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Portland Fire Bureau spokesman Paul Corah said three units were damaged, two extensively.
No cause has been determined and the name of the victim has been withheld pending notification of her family. Killingsworth is closed from 39th to 48th avenues.
