EVERETT, Wash. --
A 2-alarm fire at an Everett hotel Wednesday morning was started by an unattended candle, investigators told KIRO 7.
The fire erupted at about 9:07 a.m. at the Strand Hotel in the 2900 block of Colby Avenue. The hotel houses about 38 residents.
Video from Chopper 7 showed smoke coming from the roof of the three-story building.
Firefighters used a ladder truck to hoist firefighters to the roof to cut holes in the building and fought the blaze inside. By 9:45 a.m., fire crews searched the building and reported all clear.
People in three businesses within the first floor of the building and residents in the two upper floor apartment units were evacuated. The Snohomish County Red Cross was called to help the residents and an Everett Transit bus was used to keep the people who were evacuated warm and dry.
There is smoke damage throughout the building and fire damage in at least two units.
Damage is estimated to be $230,000.
