Sept. 13--OAKLAND -- A resident was injured and an entire four-story apartment building near Lake Merritt evacuated Monday night during a two-alarm fire, officials said.

The cooking-related fire broke out about 8:30 p.m. in a third-floor apartment at a complex at 350 Newton Ave., officials said. The resident sustained a burn to his left hand and was treated at the scene.

When firefighters arrived on the scene flames were coming out of the man's apartment, Acting Batallion Chief Marshall McKee said.

Dozens of residents of the building got out on their own and there were no rescues, officials said.

It took 40 firefighters, including some using aerial hoses, about 20 minutes to control the fire.

The apartment where the fire started was gutted and the resident was provided shelter by the Red Cross. McKee said there was also some minor fire damage to the apartment above and water damage to the unit below. All residents were allowed to return to the building.

No damage figure has been set.
