MANCHESTER, N.H. --

Manchester Fire Department officials said they are investigating a fatal fire on Brown Avenue Saturday.

The one-alarm fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. in a single-family home. First responders were on the scene within six minutes and pulled the victim from the home within minutes. The victim, however, did not survive the fire.

Fire officials identified the victim as 80 year-old Frances Cross. Her two sons told Channel 9 she was a self-sufficient individual who lived alone.

One of the neighbors called me and said the house was on fire and they were loading her in the ambulance. One of the police officers told me they were taking her to the hospital. I just came here now, I had been at the hospital since, said David Cross, the victims son.

Officials believe the fire started in the kitchen.

"It looks like it might have started on a pot on the stove, and they're going around now looking for any type of accelerants, but everything they've told me so far, it just looks like an accident," said Ron Cross, the victim's son.

One firefighter injured his back while fighting the fire.
