TUCKER, Ga. --
A DeKalb County family is OK after a fire destroyed their home early Monday morning.
The house is on Cedar Knoll Drive in Tucker.
Firefighters said the fire started about 2:30 a.m.
Flames could be seen shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived.
Neighbors told Channel 2’s Amanda Cook a police officer driving on the nearby interstate saw the flames first, rushed over to the house and started banging on doors to wake people up.
When firefighters arrived, neighbors let them know a family of six lived inside the house.
Cook said there was an intense search, but it turned out the family was not home at the time.
One neighbor, who has children, told Cook how grateful he was that the officer woke his family up so they could evacuate and get away from the huge fire.
"The children were dead asleep, and they wake them up and we appreciate it," Abdul Hakim Awmalain said.
Firefighters said house was a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
