NEW HAVEN, Conn. --

Fire officials in New Haven said three adults and one child were rescued from a fire Friday afternoon.

The blaze broke out on Orchard Street after noon, according to fire officials.

Todd Kornacki, a firefighter, was driving past the home when he noticed the fire and called for help before running into the building to warn residents.

"There was fire on the outside of the house, and I gave it the size up for a working fire. Then myself and a police officer tried to evacuate the building," Kornacki said.

The firefighter began kicking in doors on all three floors of the home in an attempt to get people out. Three people were rescued, including a child who was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire investigators said the fire began in the home's porch, but traveled over and into the home.
