NEW ORLEANS --

A fire burned part of the Orleans Parish coroner's office Monday, causing the building to be evacuated, firefighters said.

The area where autopsies are performed and bodies are stored was not damaged in the fire, but city officials and electricians were working Monday afternoon to restore power to that area.

The New Orleans Fire Department said it responded to a 911 call of a fire at 10:18 a.m., at 2612 Marin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Firefighters found heavy smoke when they arrived, and all seven employees of the forensic center had left the building.

Investigators believe the fire may have started in the area of the building used as a kitchen. Six units and 15 firefighters responded, and the fire was under control at 10:43 a.m., firefighters said.
