ATLANTA --
Firefighters rescued a disabled elderly man from a burning southwest Atlanta home Wednesday morning.
Martha Jefferson told Channel 2’s Richard Elliot that her husband, Lamar, suffers from multiple sclerosis and is confined to his bed.
When Jefferson noticed smoke filling their home, she tried to carry him to safety. She said she physically couldn’t make it outside lifting her husband, so she dialed 911 and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
Soon, Atlanta fire crews arrived and Jefferson explained her husband’s condition. Firefighters rushed inside and searched room-to-room until they found her husband on the floor.
Firefighters carried Lamar Jefferson out a second-story window and down a ladder. They told Elliot he was breathing and had a pulse at the scene. He was transported to Grady Hospital, but there was no word on his condition.
Fire investigators said they don’t know what started the fire.
