CHARLOTTE, N.C.
--
Investigators are trying to figure out why two young children trapped in a smoke-filled west Charlotte apartment were apparently left home alone.
The flames broke out in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment at Little Rock Apartments on Leake Street, according to firefighters. Firefighters said they left their hoses outside and rushed into the home to rescue the two children.
A woman visiting the complex, Monika Moore, saw the firefighters bring the children out with oxygen masks. "There was no movement. They looked unconscious," she said.
Firefighters said one is a year old and the other is just 11 months old.
A neighbor, Daniel McBryde, said, "Just to think that two, two babies, that's scary. That's the scariest thing, and I have two of my own and they're much older so that's the scariest thing."
The two children were taken to Carolinas Medical Center and are expected to be OK. Firefighters haven't determined what caused the fire. No charges have been filed.
Volunteers from the Greater Carolinas chapter of the American Red Cross will work with affected families on a case-by-case basis, the organization said. They will provide assistance for food, shelter and clothing as needed.
