Fire Destroys 8 Apartments in Houston

HOUSTON -- A fire at at an apartment complex in southwest Houston destroyed eight homes. The fire started at the Central Park Apartments on South Gessner Drive at Meadowglen Lane late Saturday night. About 100 firefighters kept the fire from spreading to 16 other apartments in the building. "Didn't get scared. In shock," said Francisco Prieto. Water flooded his apartment. He had lived there for three years. Prieto said, "I'm happy because I'm living. I'm alive. I see that God helped me."

The fire started at the Central Park Apartments on South Gessner Drive at Meadowglen Lane late Saturday night. About 100 firefighters kept the fire from spreading to 16 other apartments in the building.

"Didn't get scared. In shock," said Francisco Prieto. Water flooded his apartment. He had lived there for three years. Prieto said, "I'm happy because I'm living. I'm alive. I see that God helped me."

The fire eventually went to three alarms. That meant more firefighters and resources were committed to fighting the fire.

Firefighters said the management at the complex and the Red Cross were helping the people affected by the fire.

Fire investigators were trying to find out what started the fire.
