INDIANAPOLIS --
The Howe Community High School football team's equipment barn burned Monday morning in what school officials believe was arson.
The team lost all its field equipment, such as tackling dummies, yard markers and chains, in the blaze.
"Apparently, the coach had come down at 8 a.m. to get things out for practice and didn't notice any burning or anything," said Danny Wilson, Howe athletic director. "But it sounds like they burnt the barn between the time that the kids and everyone was inside and about 11 or 11:30 a.m."
Other Indianapolis public schools have chipped in to help.
"We have wonderful people that work in the athletic departments at IPS, and I've been in contact with some of them," Wilson said. "The athletic director at (Arsenal) Tech, Keith Burke, he said, 'Whatever you need, we'll get for you.' I called Chris Walker over at Manual (High School), and he had some extra things from their football program that they're not using currently."
Howe's game at home this weekend will go on as scheduled.
