Dec. 05--A man was killed in the burning wreckage of his Fountain mobile home early Monday morning, according to the Fountain Fire Department.
The man's wife and two young children, a boy aged five and a girl aged 10, escaped the fire unharmed, said Fountain Fire Chief Darin Anstine.
Two neighboring mobile homes in the Crest Mobile Estates also burned. The residents were not injured, Anstine said. Two cars also burned.
The man's wife smelled smoke and woke up at about 2 a.m., Anstine said.
All four family members fled the home, but the husband returned to get his wife's keys and purse, Anstine said. Firefighters found his body at the rear of the home.
The house was partially collapsed and consumed in flames when firefighters arrived just after 2 a.m., Anstine said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The home did not have a working smoke detector, Anstine said.
Donations for the family can be dropped off at any Fountain fire station; checks should be made out to the City of Fountain Fire Department, Auxiliary.
